Tips for Storing Fragile and Dangerous Items

Pointy edges, spiny points and broken glass are a mover’s worst nightmare.

Difficult to pack and possibly hazardous and fragile items require extra provisions during the process of moving. Appropriate packaging protects both items and movers. Here is how you should pack some of the most challenging items for moving.

Blocked Knives

Your knives may have come with a block - be it plastic or wooden - to keep them secure and sharp, pack them in the block. You can keep the knives in place with tape or dividers, and wrap them with tape and bubble wrap, or any other form of packaging that you prefer.

Loose Knives

With steak knives and other sharp utensils that do not have casings or covers, wrap them together in a towel or a durable box that can then be wrapped, and keep it separate from your other boxes. Be sure to label this wrapped towel or box with “careful: sharp knives,” so you and others can avoid getting hurt when it is time to unwrap them.

Razor Blades

Keep all your grooming necessities in a makeup bag. They should travel with you during the move and not on the moving truck or tucked away in a box. If you cannot avoid packing them, consider creating a secure cardboard cover for the razor to keep the blades covered during the move. Take extra provisions to wrap the whole razor and cardboard cover with bubble wrap before placing into a box. Label this with “careful: razor blades.”

Cacti

If you own any cacti, they should be carefully packed, and kept with the rest of your plants. Remember to consider their prickly nature. With gloves on, carefully wrap your cactus in its pot with several layers of newspaper, then cover it with a layer of bubble wrap. Place your cactus into a box with packing peanuts and label as “careful: cactus.”

Kitchen Accessories, Gardening Tools, School Supplies

These items that are made up of prickly parts. Like your loose knives, create cardboard or plastic covers for the sharp edges. Wrap each item until it is safe for transportation.

Common Pins

Pins used for sewing and other tasks can become a hapless moving mess. If you do not already own one, get yourself a pin cushion to secure your pins. When you have them all in the pin cushion, wrap them with newspaper and bubble wrap before tucking them into a box.

Glassware

You can use cardboard dividers or cell boxes to your benefit for moving glassware. Take extra precaution with your stemware, and wrap each of them with extra cushion. Wrap the glass in paper and bubble wrap, label boxes “FRAGILE: glassware,”. Be sure to use extra packing materials to keep the glasses from shifting.

Dishes

Cover your breakable dishes with sufficient packing peanuts, to keep them from shifting and sliding. You should individually wrap each piece in bubble wrap or paper, and label as “FRAGILE: dishes.”

Vases

Consider using speciality boxes for items, such as your vases. If you still have it, you can use the box the vase came in, or look for boxes specially made to hold your vases during a move. Wrap them in newspaper and bubble wrap before placing into the box, and mark as “FRAGILE: vase.”

Mirrors

Not only is it bad luck, a cracked mirror offers extra sharp edges you would never intend to deal with during your moving process. First use duct tape to create an X over your mirror. This will help keep the mirror from shifting and the glass together should it crack. You can use foam board, bubble wrap, and/or another cushioning material to cover your mirror to prepare it for transportation. Cover edges of the frame with cardboard corners, and secure in a vertical box so other objects do not crush it and label as “FRAGILE: mirror.”

When you pack with care, you ensure your moving and storing process is as easy as 123. Pay attention to labels on boxes to avoid injury when you are unpacking, and take note of boxes labelled “FRAGILE” when it is time to unload them from a truck or out of a storage -unit facility. You can now keep your valuables safe and your fingers undamaged.
