Helping People With ADHD To Get Organized.

Many people have probably heard of the acronym ‘ADHD’, but don’t really know what it is. Well, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), according to the National Institutes of Health, is “one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity)”. Can you imagine that there are around 8 million adults with this disorder, and many of them find it very hard to get and stay organized? We don’t blame them. That’s why we want to try to help. We’ll show you seven steps that you or someone you know with ADHD can use to help you win this battle. 1. Break stuff down: (No, not literally). Take the task and break it down into smaller parts. You’ll be better able to manage it. It is easier for persons with ADHD to focus on something that is very stimulating and it can be hard for them to change their focus onto something that’s not. You can make a list of the tasks to be completed and then check them off when they’re done or you can draw a picture of the room you want to organize and make notes that will walk you through each step. 2. Switch a room up intentionally: Remember what we just stated? People with ADHD always need change, so that would be a great way to organize a room. Facilitate change in that room. Allow things to be easily moveable or set different spots for different activities. 3. Make a work schedule: Work in short sessions. Working for half an hour and then taking a break is a great idea! 4. Partner up: Another great idea is to get someone to help you – it could be a professional organizer, a family member or a friend. It can help facilitate the focus on the tasks at hand. 5. What do you like? Do what works best for you. You don’t have to stick to the script and work with what organizing magazines or other organizing guides come up with. Use them only as a guideline, but make your home comfortable to you. 6. Reward yourself: After each mini-session, reward yourself. It’s a great way to stay motivated until the project is complete. 7. Move things with you: “Set a rule that every time you move in your house, something else moves with you.” When you move from one room to another, move something with you. For instance, if you’ve got clean laundry piled up on the sofa, and you’re moving from the living room into the bedroom, grab a handful of clothes and bring it along with you. Keep doing that and you’ll see how far it gets you. Take it from us, these tips will really help. We’ve got what you are looking for concerning self-storage in Ottawa.
