Aylmer
Aylmer is one of five cities that merged in 2002 to become part of Gatineau, a section of the city of Ottawa. Aylmer struggles to maintain a small town atmosphere since its merger with the bustling city of Gatineau. Aylmer is a great residential area with limited commercial space that is growing.
Aylmer is primarily considered a suburb of Hull and Ottawa. The area was named after Lord Aylmer, a Governor General of British North America and Lieutenant Governor of Lower Canada in the 1800s.
The town is billed as the "Recreation Capital of the National Capital", and rightly so. It has several golf courses, green spaces, spas, bicycle paths and a marina. In the summer, activities center around the waterfront where there is boating, water-skiing, swimming, and parasailing. In winter, the waterfront offers ice fishing, snowmobiling, para-skiing and skating.
Aylmer is home to several parks. The Grind Skate Park was built in 2005, attracting residents of all ages to enjoy. Monteith Band Shell Park, located in downtown Aylmer, is an excellent spot for a picnic in the shade of its large mature trees. Other parks include Centennial Park, Crystal Park, Estates Park, and a large number of others.
There is little industry in Aylmer, being a family oriented region with large housing developments that bring new families into the growing community. Most of the major service businesses are situated along Chemin d'Aylmer. This area's indoor swimming pool and skateboard park are very popular in the city.
