Hull
Established in 1800 by Philemon Wright, Hull was first formed on the Ottawa River near the Chaudiere Falls. It is the oldest section of the National Capital Region. In 2002, Hull and four other cities merged to become part of the city of Gatineau, a portion of the city of Ottawa. Prior to this, Hull’s population was approximately 66,000. The residential people of Hull primarily speak French.
The original 1800 settlement in Hull was destroyed by fire in 1900. Hull’s commercial site was entirely transformed during the 1970s and early 80s through demolition and rebuilding. The remodeling of the city displaced 4,000 residents and uprooted numerous businesses.
Hull rests in the Outaouais region within the City of Gatineau. It sits where the Gatineau and Ottawa Rivers join. Known for its difficult to traverse Kettle Rapids, navigation beyond Hull on the Ottawa River remains difficult to this day.
Casino du Lac Leamy attracts tourists from all over, named after the small lake that surrounds it. The Museum of Civilization is another popular attraction, an architectural marvel in its own right. Canada’s most popular museum houses exhibits on four floors and also houses an IMAX Theatre, cafes and souvenir shops.
