Stittsville was first settled by farmers in 1824. At that time, the area was surrounded by swamps and marshlands. The original town, now called "Old Stittsville" was situated at small crossroads, with a few houses, a small inn, general store and post office. The store and post office were owned by Jackson Stitt for who the town was named. the town has grown a great deal since then and is now a vibrant and secure community.
In 1870, there was a devastating fire, known as the Great Carleton Fire. Nearly everything in the town was destroyed, and only a handful of buildings were left standing. The fire burned more than 250,000 acres from Ottawa to Smiths Falls to Carleton Place, burning for almost a week. The regrowth of Stittsville did not occur until the 1870s, when Canadian Pacific built a railway line that connected Ottawa to the active lumber town known as Carleton Place. This resulted in the community being rebuilt around the railway station, about a mile to the south.
Stittsville was incorporated 1956, and became a village in 1961. In 1974 it merged with Goulbourn Township and then became part of the city of Ottawa when it Goulbourn merged with the city in 2001, along with 10 other communities.
The area has grown rapidly since the 1970s. This is when the Queensway was extended into the area, making travel to Ottawa more convenient. This change transformed the quiet farming village of less than 500 residents into a burgeoning suburb of 20,000 people, over a span of 25 years. The village is expected to continue its steady growth in the coming years.
