Vanier
Vanier is a small neighbourhood with a notable history. Vanier was known as Eastview until 1969 when it was renamed after the late Governor General Georges Vanier. The neighbourhood was one of the 11 municipalities that merged with the city of Ottawa in 2001. It is known for its large French speaking population and a liberal disposition. Vanier is home to about 17,000 residents.
Vanier is a neighbourhood situated east of Ottawa, across the Rideau River from Lowertown and Sandy Hill. It is located south of Rockcliffe Park and New Edinburgh. Gloucester rests to the east of Vanier.
The Vanier neighbourhood has a large Catholic population, and has several churches. It is also home to the Grotte des Lourdes, an outdoor Catholic shrine.
One of Vaniers most celebrated local events is the Maple Sugar Fest, taking place in the first week of April. The festival offers myriad family activities centered around the manufacture of maple syrup. It is a family favourite of residents and tourists alike.
Vanier provides a wide array of shops, strip malls, restaurants and bars. The neighbourhood’s proximity to downtown Ottawa makes it desirable for those seeking an affordable place to live. Vanier also allows convenient access to the remainder of Ottawa through the Queensway and the Vanier Parkway, which can both be accessed easily from most areas of the neighbourhood.
